Hi I'm 24 and have been a designer for 3+ years.
Even now I think
I'm an OK logo designer, the issue for me is there are some
Logo designing who design logo just aren't that good but will spend days and
days (at a hefty day rate) writing a detailed intense branding booklet about
why said logo looks like it does, LOADS of rationale and LOADS of buzzwords and
then.. tahhh dahhhh.... a pretty, BUT they've said so much! And they've
put together so many pages that the client just feels like it's MUST BE right!I've
seen this happen so so many times it honestly depresses me.I
think logo design can be learnt quickly if you have a good eye for
aesthetics/composition, but most importantly if you can put yourself in the
clients shoes.
you can talk to them and also understand their
clients and values, finally have the self belief that you can take the creative
decisions away from them and deliver them something from the outside looking
in... If you can do that then that's almost 70% of the job... YOU might need to
learn some sweet illustrator/photo shop skills to actually make it, or you can
hire someone to do that for you.
I really believe
if you've got an eye for Logo designing, some charisma and can string a
sentence together than everyone is capable.
As for me...
The Logo
designing I've created in my years as a professional designer have come from
sitting and working closely with the client AND their customers, talking and
getting into heir mindset and then talking to them and seeing if my doodles
(usually 4/5 first mock up sketches (or sometimes we call them scamps) are on the
same wavelength as the client.
Once that scamp
is along the right lines then I'll work on creating them in illustrator and
then into photo shop... I'll do these in grey scale first of all.
Once again I'll
show the client/customer and see what they think... from here I'll try and
narrow the 4/5 scamps down to 2/3...
Then the sweet
sweet color comes in.. if they have some brand guidelines I'll use them, if not
I'll work with the client to define them..
Finally we have
1/2 versions that then takes about 6 months for them to decide after they've
asked their friends, wife, girlfriend, husband, neighbor, mate at the gym, cat,
postman and parents ...

on to this… “It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation.”
These are the golden words by Herman Melville, a famous American novelist.
Basically he's saying don't steal! HOWEVER have a look at, Hoot suite, Flip
board, Beats by Dee, Medium and a bunch of other that have massive similarities
with some logos that were produced either in the 80’s or by Bauhaus! Some
